Head Up Display

Head Up Display

The design and implementation of head up displays is a core competency within Seattle Photonics. Not only have we supported the aircraft platforms with the designs of new systems, we’ve upgraded systems that are nearly 50 years old with new relay optics and image generation optics, but we’ve also patented a novel head up display system for use in automotive applications. We’ve worked with several American auto manufactures and tier 1 suppliers in the development of their new HUD systems. These systems have included LCoS, DMD and scanner systems for use as the image source. Head up displays are challenging to design as they require reasonable eye relief and large eyeboxes to accommodate viewer motion during vehicle operation. Likewise, they require high brightness for daylight operations and are often constrained in the volume available for the optics and display engines. At Seattle Photonics, we work with our clients to appropriately define the requirements for a particular system or application before designing these systems to insure the best possible outcome given the starting points of the aircraft or car. Its is this understanding of these requirements that allowed us to define a new optical system that provides excellent eyebox size with an extremely low profile mechanical housing.
