TOOLING DESIGN

Frequently optical systems require special mechanical components to aid in the assembly or alignment process. These mechanical parts can be high precision components, and often they need to interface to a laser, auto-collimator or some other piece of optical metrology hardware. SPA has designed tooling to help in the assembly process of several systems, and some examples of tooling design are listed below:

  • SPA designed and implemented a 6-axis tool to align a fiber to another fiber during the bonding process.
  • A press tool was developed to load elements into a lens barrel that has a line to line fit on the spacer rings.
  • Tooling was developed to align several layers of micro-lens arrays to sub-micron resolution.
  • SPA has designed many fixtures to align off-axis optics to be tested on interferometers.
